Since its launch, the game has prompted fans to figure out how to put the best starting five together from past and present NBA eras with the goal of achieving a perfect 82-0 record in a simulated season.
The phenomenon has drawn reactions from fans, as well as NBA superstar Tyrese Haliburton, former NBA player Brandon Jennings, radio host Dan Le Batard and commentator Nick Wright, among others.
The game doesn’t just allow you to put five random great players on a roster together. There would be no challenge to that, though it’s not exactly like Elden Ring in terms of its complexity.
Players must go through five rounds, with each round displaying an NBA team and a decade to choose one player from. For instance, if you get the 2010s New York Knicks, Carmelo Anthony would probably be your No. 1 pick at one of the forward positions.
It is harder if you are taking players from past eras when there was less official record-keeping being done by the NBA. Blocks didn’t become a recognized stat in the league until the 1973-74 season, five years after Bill Russell retired.
The game does recognize that Russell was a historic player who can be an impactful addition on your roster, but his full impact may not be felt in the same way that someone like 2010s LeBron James would be.
Ultimately, the game is a fun test to see the best roster you can build based on the options that come up for you. At the very least it gives players an opportunity to use strategy when filling out a starting five to see if they can build a “perfect” team.
