CLAYTON COUNTY, Ga. — Search and rescue efforts are underway as a vulnerable 6-year-old boy is missing from Riverdale.
His family believes he walked out of an apartment around 11 a.m., and they have not seen him since.
Channel 2’s Cory James was on the scene at an apartment complex in Riverdale for WSB Tonight at 11 p.m.
Around 8 p.m. Clayton County police dive team members were out in a nearby lake searching for 6-year old Ramon Jett, who goes by the name RJ.
Family members say the young child is autistic and also has ADHD.
They say he was at his sister’s apartment here while their mom was at work.
According to RJ’s mom, after the family woke up from a nap around 1 p.m., he was gone.
“Very hard not knowing where to look. We’ve searched everything and just hoping somebody sees him,” said Ashleigh Harris, RJ’s mom. “We’re just praying for good news.”
“From my understanding this is not their home,” said Major Frank Thomas of Clayton County PD. “They were staying here momentarily, but at normal home they had high locks on doors so he just couldn’t open regular handle. But the home here had safety door handles which he was able to manipulate.”
The boy as last seen wearing a green shirt, camouflage shorts. He’s listed as 40 pounds and 3 feet, 5 inches tall.
In an update this afternoon, Clayton County PD said the child is nonverbal.
Neighbors say the child with a popsicle.
“Due to his condition, he may be unable to communicate or seek help, and officers are deeply concerned for his safety. Every minute is critical,” Clayton County PD said.
People in the area, especially near the 8000 block of Webb Road, are urged to check yards, porches, outbuilding, wooded areas and other locations where someone might seek shelter.
If you see RJ, call 911.
“Your call could be the one that brings him home safely,” Clayton County PD said.
