dpThe San Francisco 49ers announced they have released defensive lineman Vincent Anthony Jr. from the practice squad. This comes a day after signing Matthew Judon. That seems like a 1-for-1 swap, as the team was unlikely to elevate Anthony Jr. to the active roster.
Here’s what Kyle Shanahan said about Judon on Monday:
“I know we had a workout with him over the weekend, so just to really get him in with the group on Wednesday, see where he’s at. Starting him out in individual drills, just seeing the type of shape and stuff he’s in, what he can learn in the scheme. Obviously, with our situation, hopefully we’ll get him caught up here real fast, and hopefully he’ll be an option to help us.”
According to the NFL’s transaction wire, the 49ers worked out 5 different receivers and three defensive backs. We already went over Brady Boyd. Here are the other wideouts:
Dante Pettis
Brenden Rice
Malik Turner
Quentin Skinner
That is Jerry Rice’s son. He grew up in my backyard here in Phoenix. Rice was a seventh-round pick from the 2024 NFL Draft. He’s listed at 6’3”, 210 pounds.
Some fans figured Turner would be back on the roster sooner rather than later, given all the injuries.
Skinner might be the only recognizable name. He went undrafted in the 2025 NFL Draft. He’s another tall wideout, listed at 6’5”, weighing 195 pounds.
Quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson was listed on the transaction wire as the quarterback who had the tryout, but that’s more than likely the 49ers needing somebody to throw the wide receivers the ball.
The other defensive backs, other than Sam Webb, were Cobee Bryant and Corey Ballentine. Bryant was with Raheem Morris in Atlanta last season. He played 93 snaps at cornerback for the Falcons as a rookie.
Ballentine has been in the NFL since 2019, bouncing around between the Giants, Packers, and most recently the Cowboys last season.
