Deadline to file a claim for payment in Trader Joe’s receipt settlement is almost here

WASHINGTON — Time is running out for Trader Joe’s shoppers to claim their share of a $7.4 million class action settlement. 

The payments stem from a lawsuit alleging that the grocery chain printed too much credit and debit card information on customer receipts in 2019, potentially exposing shoppers to the risk of identity theft.

Those who qualify could get more than $100 from the settlement. But, you’ll have to act fast. The deadline to file a claim is Tuesday, June 9, 2026. 

Not all Trader Joe’s customers are eligible for payments through the settlement. 

If you made a purchase at a Trader Joe’s store using a credit card or debit card between March 5, 2019 and July 19, 2019, you may qualify. However, not all shoppers in that timeframe are included. 

Only those who received a receipt formatted to display the first six and last four digits of their card number.

The estimated payout per claimant is approximately $102.45, though the final amount depends on how many people file valid claims.

The plaintiff sued Trader Joe’s in 2019, alleging the company violated the Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act, known as FACTA, by printing the first six and last four digits of customers’ card numbers on receipts. Federal law generally limits printed receipts to the last five digits only.

Trader Joe’s denies any wrongdoing. The company notes that not all of its stores printed the affected receipts and that only a small minority of transactions at those stores produced them. No customer has reported identity theft linked to the receipts, according to the company.

Customers qualify if all of the following are true:

• They used a credit or debit card at a Trader Joe’s store between March 5, 2019, and July 19, 2019.
• Their receipt was formatted to display the first six and last four digits of their card number.
• They are the account holder on that card.

Not every purchase during that period qualifies — only transactions at stores where the affected payment software was running. Customers who received a notice by email or postcard have already been identified as potential class members.

Eligible customers can submit a claim in three ways before the June 9 deadline:

• Online: Visit www.TJ-FACTASettlement.com. A Class ID number, included in any notice mailed or emailed to potential class members, is required.
• By phone: Call 1-888-444-7415.
• By mail: Send a completed claim form to the settlement administrator at:
  • Keim v. Trader Joe’s Settlement Administrator, P.O. Box 301134, Los Angeles, CA 90030-1134.

Customers who do nothing will receive no payment and will forfeit their right to sue Trader Joe’s over the same issue in the future.

A court hearing to determine whether to approve the settlement is scheduled for Aug. 10.
