dpAngie Nixon responds to Vice President JD Vance’s remarks that she doesn’t belong in America
ORLANDO, Fla. —
Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate Angie Nixon is speaking out after this comment from Vice President JD Vance during Thursday’s rally in Lakeland.
“When Angie Nixon calls herself a socialist,” Vance said, “I think the right response is to say, ‘Then get the hell out of here. You don’t belong in America if those are your views.'”
Nixon told WESH 2 on Friday that Republicans are launching personal attacks, instead of focusing on the issues.
“The fact that they are trying to demonize me and tell me I need to leave the country, the very country that I was born and raised in, the very state, and knowing again that my ancestors helped build this country and so I also don’t even know where I’d go back to,” Nixon said, adding the comment was shameful and disrespectful.
Nixon was in Melbourne on Friday for a nonpartisan disability policy community forum.
Sen. Ashley Moody, R-Florida, did not attend.
The Republican incumbent and nominee is framing this race as a choice between socialism and freedom.
“She wants to destroy the framework on which this country was built,” Moody said during her speech in Lakeland.
While she’s joined the Democratic Socialists of America, Nixon told WESH 2, “I don’t identify as anything. I identify as Angie, a hard-working person who is going to put people first.”
Appointed to the U.S. Senate by Gov. Ron DeSantis after Marco Rubio became Secretary of State, Moody is touting her vote for the temporary tax cuts in President Trump’s “One Big Beautiful Bill.”
“We delivered historic tax cuts that you no longer pay tax on overtime, you no longer have to pay tax on Social Security,” Moody said at the rally. “We brought that to you with this administration.”
If elected, Nixon said she’d fight to repeal that legislation.
“My issue with that big BS bill, because it was not beautiful, is the fact that Donald Trump decided to give tax breaks only to the ultra-wealthy, and because of that Medicaid programs are being cut,” Nixon said.
Nixon added she’s also concerned about cuts to housing programs.
This week, Bernie Sanders announced he’s giving money from his war chest to the Nixon campaign.
Nixon told WESH 2 the Vermont senator will be coming to Florida before Election Day on Nov. 3.
