IonQ (NYSE:IONQ) shares rose 11.8% in pre-market trading on Wednesday after the quantum computing company announced the development and testing of a real-time quantum error correction decoder designed to operate on a single standard CPU.
The company announced the results after Tuesday’s market close, describing the system as the industry’s first end-to-end real-time quantum error correction decoder to operate on a single off-the-shelf CPU.
Quantum error correction is intended to identify and address errors that occur during quantum computations. IonQ said its approach is designed to reduce delays associated with classical decoding hardware processing errors while a quantum system is operating.
Decoder Tested Across 408 Logical Qubits
IonQ said its dual-decoder architecture was benchmarked using circuits simulating as many as 408 logical qubits and more than 31.5 million individual quantum operations.
The company reported processing overhead of 0.02% stretch time during the testing.
Nicolas Delfosse, IonQ’s quantum research lead, said the tests represented progress in the company’s development programme.
“Successfully validating real-time decoding across hundreds of logical qubits and over millions of logical operations is an important milestone. Moreover, the fact that our decoder runs on a single CPU provides a practical path to commercial-scale fault-tolerant quantum computing.”
IonQ said the results also validate an element of its proprietary Walking Cat architecture, which forms part of its development roadmap for systems designed to control thousands of qubits.
IonQ Announces SDT Partnership
Separately, IonQ disclosed a multi-year strategic partnership with South Korea’s SDT to deliver a Superion 256 quantum computer.
The agreement expands IonQ’s commercial activity in the Asia-Pacific region alongside its quantum computing research and development programme.
The company did not provide financial terms for the partnership in the announcement.
Other Quantum Computing Stocks Also Rise
Shares of other quantum computing companies also advanced during Tuesday’s after-hours session following IonQ’s announcement.
The gains continued into Wednesday’s pre-market trading as broader U.S. equity futures recorded smaller moves. S&P 500 futures were up 0.2%, while Nasdaq futures gained 0.1%.
IonQ’s 11.8% pre-market increase followed the company’s quantum error correction announcement and disclosure of the SDT partnership.
