dpAs of Sunday morning, the National Hurricane Center is monitoring a system in the deep Atlantic with a medium chance of development over the next week.
This system has a 30% chance of development over the next 48 hours and a 40% chance over the next seven days. The good news is that it will slowly drift northeast across the Central Atlantic. The next name on the list is Hanna.
With the last weekend of September underway and October on the horizon, the historical likelihood of tropical activity will start to wane. The ongoing El Niño in the Pacific is creating plenty of wind shear over the Atlantic basin. This makes this hurricane season quieter than usual. This trend is expected to hold through the rest of the season, which continues until November 30th.
With seven named storms this season, three that formed in the Gulf and four in the deep Atlantic, we have not had any hurricanes. This is the first time in nearly 100 years we have not seen a single hurricane this late in the season.
