Canceled CBS drama to make epic return this fall on new network

One of CBS’s canceled shows is making a major comeback.

The Shemar Moore-led drama “S.W.A.T.,” which was canceled by CBS last year after eight seasons, is returning on Starz this fall.

According to Deadline, the cable network will air “S.W.A.T. Exiles,” a 10-episode spinoff set to premiere Sept. 25. Moore will return as Daniel “Hondo” Harrelson, Patrick St. Esprit as Commander Robert Hicks, and Jay Harrington as Sergeant David “Deacon” Kay. This continuation’s new storyline will follow Hondo as he emerges from retirement to lead a S.W.A.T. unit of untested recruits.

Sony Pictures Television, which produced the series in association with CBS Studios from 2017 to 2025, actually produced the “S.W.A.T. Exiles” before securing a distributor. Fortunately, it reached an agreement with Starz that covers U.S. broadcast rights and international distribution across Europe, Latin America, Asia-Pacific, the Middle East and Africa.

In a statement to the outlet, Moore said: “’S.W.A.T. Exiles’ is coming in hot! I couldn’t be more excited that Starz is bringing this next chapter to audiences in the U.S.”

He continued: “A huge thank you to Sony Pictures Television for believing in this franchise and continuing to invest in what we’ve built together. What makes this moment even more special is that we’re reaching audiences in all major territories worldwide. Fans everywhere will get to experience this epic new ride together.”

The spinoff was filmed in Los Angeles, where production began in September 2025 and wrapped in late winter 2026.

“S.W.A.T.” follows an elite Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) Special Weapons and Tactics team led by Moore’s character. The show centers on high-stakes tactical operations, community policing, and the officers personal struggles as they work to protect the city.
