Iowa weather: Tracking strong storms this evening

The hottest air of the summer pushed in this afternoon with highs in the mid-90s and heat index readings around 105 degrees. A cold front moving in this evening will bring scattered storms, especially across central and eastern Iowa. Storms are possible in northern Iowa between 2 and 3 p.m., reaching central Iowa by 5 to 7 p.m. The line will continue to drop south, pushing into southern Iowa by 6 to 9 p.m. A few strong to severe storms are possible, especially east of I-35. Damaging winds are the main risk, but a tornado cannot be ruled out, especially the farther east you are in Iowa.Some scattered storms could develop behind that initial line, lingering through around Midnight. However, any additional storms are unlikely to be severe. Pockets of heavy rain will be possible.Cooler air pushes in behind the front with gusty north winds on Tuesday. Highs only top out in the low to mid-80s, with some 70s possible in northern Iowa. Much of the area could see highs in the upper 70s on Wednesday. The mild air continues Thursday and Friday with highs near 80.Rain chances are lower through the end of the week, with only a slight chance of showers Thursday into Friday.
