dpHoward Stern addressed Robin Quivers’ cancer battle when he re-upped with SiriusXM back in December, noting that she was fighting every day, “trying to save her own life.”
Quivers’ cancer was something that fans of the show were acutely aware of, too, over the past decade.
On Monday, Quivers, 73, stunned everyone in a good way with the latest update on her health.
“I’m cancer-free,” she said on Stern’s show.
“Robin, it gives me a chill to even say it, but this is honestly the best news ever,” Stern said. “Fourteen years ago, when Robin was diagnosed, she took charge of her health. She started to do all the right things. She never deviated.
“And I’m telling you, Robin, on behalf of this show, and you know, of course, to me, you’re the most important,” Stern added. “And I love you. And I am so happy for you. And I don’t even know what you must be feeling inside.”
Quivers said she couldn’t believe the “unbelievable miracle.”
“I was like a person who’s won the lottery and can’t believe their eyes when they’re seeing all the numbers,” she said. “Is this what I think it says?”
Quivers admitted to Stern that treatment was tough but added, “I never gave up hope.”
Stern and Quivers, who began her radio career as a newscaster at WIOO in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, have been together since 1981. Quivers had been battling endometrial cancer since 2012.
When Stern announced the new deal, he said that he would not have agreed to it if Quivers was not prepared to come along for the ride.
“I’m happy to announce that I’ve figured out a way to have it all,” Stern said on his show. “More free time and continuing to be on the radio. So yes, we are coming back for three years.
“I’m excited about it, because you know what? I do still love radio.”
He then discussed Quivers’ battle some.
“Let’s be honest, Robin, if I may speak for you, you needed a more flexible schedule,” he said. “Robin’s also busy trying to save her own life with a battle of cancer and it does require a tremendous amount of her time. Like when she’s not on the air, she’s busy literally fighting cancer.”
“She’s a go-getter, if you know what I mean,” Stern added. “She’s a busy body, but she’s got to say home, and she’s got to take care of herself. God forbid, anything gets into her body that could be a foreign agent. So she has really lived a lifestyle of perfection … but she’s still got to fight this (expletive) thing, right?”
