LEXINGTON — The Kentucky basketball team, which plays under the La Familia banner, had dealt with its share of injuries just three games into this year’s edition of The Basketball Tournament.
Willie Cauley-Stein was slowed by an ailment in Games 1 and 2 of the best-of-three series against The Ville, stocked by rivals from Louisville. Deandre Liggins didn’t play in the deciding Game 3 on Wednesday, July 22, at Memorial Coliseum, and in that same game, Andrew Harrison was limping toward the end of the 63-57 victory.
Jon Hood, La Familia’s first-year coach, brushed it off.
“Everybody’s all right,” he said following Wednesday’s six-point win. “We get three days. We’ll be fine. … We survive (and) advance with who we have.”

Had it been required, Hood said Liggins could have taken the floor “in an emergency situation.”
Thanks to the efforts of Liggins’ teammates, he wasn’t required.
Unlike the opening round, the quarterfinals of the TBT don’t give a team a second chance should it lose. It’s now single elimination. And legion of former Wildcats are on the precipice of the semifinals.
If La Familia downs Boeheim’s Army — it’s a group of Syracuse alums — today in Lexington, the former Cats will reach the championship round of the “Alumni Bracket” of this year’s TBT.

The Kentucky alums are moving on. Kahlil Whitney’s putback dunk off an Archie Goodwin miss seals the deal in a four-point win.
La Familia hosts Wednesday’s semifinal matchup. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. at Memorial Coliseum.
We’ve entered the Elam Ending. The first team to reach 69 points, or surpass that figure, wins.
A rough quarter for La Familia: It scored only nine points in the nine-minute period.
That allowed Boeheim’s Army, which scored 16, to surge ahead and take a four-point edge into the final quarter.
La Familia will have to author a come-from-behind win to stay alive in this year’s TBT.
La Familia led for the majority of the first half. But Boeheim’s Army pushed ahead for the first time on a 3 from Cole Swider at the 2:08 mark. The hosts fought back to take a three-point lead into the locker room.
Archie Goodwin’s 17 points led the way for La Familia, while Ty Nichols’ game-high 18 tops the tally for Boeheim’s Army.
The Syracuse alums are hanging around. Ty Nichols already is up to 15 points on 6-of-7 shooting.
La Familia cooled off a bit after its white-hot start. But it still holds a six-point lead after the opening nine minutes.
Andrew Harrison and Darryl Morsell have seven points apiece for the UK club, while Elijah Hughes’ six leads Boeheim’s Army.
The hosts are scorching the nets from downtown so far.
La Familia is up 13-5 with 6:26 left in the first quarter. The Kentucky alums are 4 for 5 from the field, with all the attempts and makes being 3s.
