dpGoogle and YouTube have agreed to pay $7.5 million to settle a class action lawsuit alleging the companies violated California’s automatic renewal law when selling YouTube TV subscriptions, with eligible subscribers able to claim approximately $92 before August 30, 2026.
The settlement resolves claims that Google LLC and YouTube LLC failed to provide required disclosures about YouTube TV’s automatic renewal terms and did not obtain proper affirmative consent before charging subscribers, according to court documents. California residents who enrolled in and paid for at least one renewal term of a YouTube TV subscription between February 1, 2017, and October 29, 2021, purchased via YouTube billing for personal or household use, qualify for the settlement.
Class members can submit claims online or by mail to receive an estimated cash payment of $92.26, with no proof of purchase required. The settlement administrator will determine the final payment amount based on the total number of valid claims filed. Multiple payout options are available, including ACH transfer, PayPal, Venmo, Zelle, virtual prepaid card, or paper check for mailed claims.
The lawsuit was originally filed in June 2020 by plaintiff Lance Dutcher and alleged that YouTube made it difficult for consumers to cancel subscriptions and failed to comply with California’s disclosure requirements. Google and YouTube have not admitted wrongdoing but agreed to settle to avoid further litigation risk and uncertainty, according to settlement documents.
California’s Automatic Renewal Law requires businesses to clearly disclose the terms of automatically renewing subscriptions and obtain explicit consumer consent before charging. The law has become a focus for enforcement actions in recent years, with multiple class action lawsuits targeting streaming and subscription-based companies over compliance failures.
To file a claim, eligible subscribers can visit the settlement website at YouTubeTVSettlement.com and enter the login ID and PIN found on their settlement notice. Alternatively, they can download and mail a claim form to the settlement administrator. The claim deadline is August 30, 2026, and the final approval hearing is scheduled for October 15, 2026. Payments will begin to be distributed to approved claimants approximately 105 days after the court grants final approval, pending any appeals.
As cable TV subscriptions continue to decline amid the rise of streaming services, disputes over subscription practices have intensified. The YouTube TV settlement reflects broader scrutiny of how streaming companies handle automatic renewals and consumer disclosures.
