dpATLANTA — Yearly equipment releases create an interesting conundrum for pros with equipment deals. And it gets even more interesting when you’re coming off a banner season. Rory McIlroy understands this better than most.
On paper, McIlroy’s 2024 season wasn’t deemed a standout season by his standards. It included four worldwide wins and more than $10 million in PGA Tour earnings—but it did see him find a driver that, by his accounts, was one of the best he’d ever used in TaylorMade’s Qi10.
McIlroy calls these drivers “snowflakes.” It’s one that just feels right, down to the weighting of the head and how the shaft reacts at impact. These are tough drivers to replicate, especially when you’re being asked to offer new feedback late in the year on forthcoming product.
Since McIlroy joined TaylorMade in 2017, he’s experienced yearly equipment cycles. That meant sometimes playing a driver for less than a year, and then being introduced to something new.
Last year, McIlroy attempted to move on from TaylorMade’s Qi10 and get acquainted with Qi35, but the test run only lasted three rounds at the Arnold Palmer Invitational. He eventually went back to Qi10 and won the Masters for the first time.
While the driver is one of only 14 clubs in the bag, it’s a significant one for McIlroy. Since making the move to Qi4D—and winning the Masters again—he’s grown accustomed to TaylorMade’s current driver. Lucky for McIlroy, he won’t have to worry about switching drivers next season, after TaylorMade announced earlier this year that they were holding off on releasing a driver in 2027 and moving to a two-year product cycle.
Asked on Tuesday at the Tour Championship if pros had a say in the decision, McIlroy confirmed he and other members in TaylorMade’s tour stable played a role in moving the product cycle out a year. The move puts TaylorMade on a similar cadence as Titleist and Ping, who’ve successfully operated under two-year product cycles.
“I think all of us have a big say in that,” McIlroy revealed. “I think all of us really want it. You think about you really like a driver you’re playing, and then something else is put in your hand say in October, November time, so nine or 10 months after you get your driver. … All the manufacturers do a great job of fitting you into what is the best product for you, but they’re all slightly different.
“Thankfully, I found a really good one that I like at the minute, but we call them snowflakes, like one Qi4D with the same head, the same loft, same weighting, sometimes it just doesn’t feel quite the same. It could be me; it could be a mental thing that I have. But I think being able to use the same driver for, say, 18 months I think just gives guys a little bit more of a level of comfort.”
It’s a small thing on the surface—pushing the release calendar out by a year—but it touches on something bigger inside the equipment business: the gap between how manufacturers build product and how tour pros actually build trust with a piece of equipment.

That “snowflake” comment is the heart of it. Two drivers can come off the line with identical numbers and still feel like different clubs in a tour player’s hands. For most golfers, that kind of variance would be background noise. For someone playing for millions with a driver that has to perform under a microscope, it’s not trivial. A longer cycle means less rolling the dice on a new “snowflake” showing up every fall.
“[T]hese drivers only last for about 18 months anyway,” McIlroy said. “The heads go. I’ve obviously fallen foul of that at the PGA last year, Scottie as well. You really can only play a driver for a year to a year and a half before you’ve got to switch it out anyway.”
That’s the practical, less romantic side to this. McIlroy’s own driver failed a USGA Characteristic Time (CT) test at last year’s PGA Championship—the same fate that befell Scottie Scheffler that week—a reminder that even a cherished gamer has a shelf life.
Put those two forces together, the comfort of consistency and the hard limit of durability, and TaylorMade’s shift looks less like a marketing decision and more like tour staff finally getting a system that matches how they actually use product.
For McIlroy, it means his Qi4D gets a second act. For the rest of the TaylorMade stable, it may mean fewer winters spent trying to get situated with a new driver when the current gamer works just fine.
