On Monday at 1:57 a.m. a heat advisory was issued by the National Weather Service valid for Tuesday between noon and 10 p.m. The advisory is for Leavenworth, Wyandotte, Johnson, Platte, Clay, Jackson, Miami, Linn, Lafayette, Saline, Howard, Cass, Pettis, Cooper, Bates and Henry counties.
The NWS informs, “Heat index values up to 105 degrees or slightly higher are expected.”
“Hot temperatures and high humidity may cause heat illnesses,” explains the NWS.
This advisory is in effect until Tuesday at 10 p.m.
During heat waves, consider the following tips from the NWS
- Stay hydrated: Make sure to drink plenty of fluids.
- Find cool shelter: Stay in an air-conditioned room.
- Avoid direct sun exposure: Protect yourself and check on vulnerable relatives and neighbors.
- Child and pet welfare: Never forget to safeguard young children and pets by not leaving them unattended in vehicles, especially during scorching weather when car interiors can become life-threateningly hot.
- Be cautious outdoors: Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside.
- Consider the timing: When possible reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening.
- Know the red flags: Understand the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
- Stay cool with clothing: Select lightweight and loose-fitting outfits for enhanced comfort.
To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. In an emergency, call 911.
