dpNASCAR veteran Rusty Wallace recently reflected on one of his toughest decisions, which was to retire from racing in 2005. He recalled the support he received from across the garage towards the same, including from Team Penske owner Roger Penske and then-NASCAR president Bill France Jr.
Wallace, who was present at the North Wilkesboro Speedway last weekend for the Window World 450 as the Grand Marshall, sat down to talk to the media pre-race. When questioned about his retirement, he revealed that although he felt he had a few more years in him, he knew “performance was starting to plateau.”
And with a final push from Penske and France Jr, the decision was indirectly taken for him.
“Roger’s like, ‘Rusty, you’ve accomplished most everything. I think it’s you’re making the right decision by stopping,’ said Wallace. “And then Bill France Jr. sat me aside, and he said, ‘I need you. I want you to; there’s a lot of stuff this sport can use you for. You don’t need to keep going on. I don’t want to see you get hurt.’ He didn’t want to see me get hurt behind the car.”

While Bill France Jr. was very vocal in voicing his support for Wallace hanging up his racing boots, the 1989 NASCAR Cup Series Champion recalled one conversation that has stuck with him over the years.
“And one of the most dramatic things that ever happened to me is when he had me in his office, and he’s talking to me about this, and he held his hand straight up like this (all fingers pointing up), and then he pretended he had a teeter totter on the top of it,” he said (via Cup Scene on YouTube). “He put his (other) hand like that, and he went, ‘Your career is teeter tottering back and forth, and I think you need to hang it up.’ Well, I said, okay.”
Although Wallace believes he had a few more years in him, he took retirement in his stride and turned to broadcasting with ESPN and then with MRN. But the NASCAR garage came knocking on his door again for a potential comeback.

Kaulig Racing, which has lured retired NASCAR drivers out of retirement to race in their RAM truck in the Craftsman Truck Series in 2026, attempted to do the same with Rusty Wallace. However, he declined the opportunity.
In the aforementioned interview, he was questioned whether he would ever do a track with Kaulig Racing’s “Free Agent” truck; Wallace revealed, saying,
“The Kaulig guys got ahold of me at the Betty Jane France poker tournament and asked me to do that. And I said no. And then I got a phone call two weeks ago from Ray Evernham wanting me to run at the White House in an IROC car, and I said yes.”
If Wallace did take up Kaulig Racing’s offer, it would have marked his second-ever start in the truck series. He only has one start in the series, which came in 1996 at Nazareth.
