In Memoriam: Former Football Head Coach Tony Reno – Yale University

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Tony Reno, the former Joel E. Smilow ’54 Head Coach of Yale Football, has died. Yale Athletics cites his extraordinary leadership, unwavering commitment to student-athletes, and lasting impact on Yale Football shaped generations of Bulldogs.

“Today, we are deeply saddened by the loss of an extraordinary member of the Yale Athletics family,” said Victoria M. “Vicky” Chun, Thomas A. Beckett Director of Athletics. “Tony Reno devoted his life to serving others and approached every day with humility, compassion, and purpose. He believed deeply in the power of mentorship and invested wholeheartedly in the success and well-being of his players, colleagues, and friends. While his accomplishments on the football field were remarkable, it is the relationships he built and the lives he changed that will define his enduring legacy. Our thoughts are with Toni, Dante, Angelina, Vince, and the entire Reno family during this time.”

Reno served as Yale’s head football coach for 14 years and leaves behind one of the most accomplished legacies in the program’s storied history. Appointed head coach in January 2012, he guided Yale to five Ivy League championships, led the Bulldogs to seven victories over Harvard in his final nine meetings with the Crimson, and amassed 83 career victories—the second-most by a head coach in Yale Football history.

Known for his humility, authenticity, and unwavering commitment to his players, Reno built a program defined not only by success on the field but also by excellence in the classroom and in the community.

During his tenure, Reno restored Yale Football to national prominence. His teams captured Ivy League titles in 2017, 2019, 2022, 2023, and 2025, while consistently competing among the nation’s top Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) programs. His final season in 2025 was among the most memorable in school history, as Yale earned an Ivy League championship and the conference’s first automatic berth to the NCAA FCS Playoffs. The Bulldogs advanced to the second round after a dramatic 43-42 comeback victory over Youngstown State, finishing the season ranked No. 13 nationally.

“Tony was a man who valued the important things in life. Family always came first, and that was evident in the special family he built and the love the Reno family shares,” said Kevin Cahill, Joel E. Smilow ’54 Head Coach of Football. “As a coach, Tony loved his players and held them to a standard they often didn’t know they were capable of reaching. He was hard on them and demanding, but every day, they knew he cared about them. It was never about him or simply about winning championships; it was about developing young men and leaders and helping them become the best versions of themselves. Along the way, we won a lot of football games. Tony will be missed dearly. His impact on so many lives will never be forgotten, and his legacy will forever be a part of the Yale Football family.”

Reno earned numerous accolades throughout his career, including Ivy League Coach of the Year honors in 2022 and two selections as the Jack Grinold Division I Coach of the Year by the New England Football Writers. His coaching staffs were recognized as the 2025 Ivy League Coaching Staff of the Year following another championship season.

Beyond the victories and accolades, Reno’s greatest legacy was the impact he had on the young men who wore the Yale uniform.

“Coach Reno understood something generations of us who played at Yale know deeply: Yale Football transforms young men’s lives”, said Patrick A. Ruwe, M.D. ’83, ’87 President, Yale Football Association. That transformation isn’t a tradition — it’s the purpose. He was an extraordinary coach, but his real legacy is how he deepened that purpose — teaching discipline, resilience, accountability, and leadership, and creating opportunities that changed the trajectory of his players’ lives.”

Under his leadership, Yale student-athletes excelled on the field, in the classroom, and beyond graduation. Six Bulldogs earned the Asa S. Bushnell Cup as Ivy League Player of the Year during his tenure, while numerous players continued their careers professionally, including NFL standout Foyesade Oluokun.

Before becoming Yale’s head coach, Reno spent more than a decade on the Bulldogs’ coaching staff under Jack Siedlecki, rising to assistant head coach and helping guide Yale to the 2006 Ivy League championship.

A native of Massachusetts and a respected figure throughout college football, Reno was admired by colleagues, opponents, alumni, and generations of former players for his integrity, humility, and unwavering dedication to those around him.

Reno is survived by his wife, Toni, and their children, Dante ’29, Angelina ’28, and Vince.

The Yale Athletics community extends its deepest condolences to the Reno family and all who knew and loved Tony. His legacy will endure through the countless lives he touched and the lasting impact he made on Yale Football and Yale University.
