dpThe Indian football team will wrap up its marquee September-October 2026 FIFA international window with an international friendly against two-time world champions Uruguay at the Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata on Tuesday.
The India vs Uruguay football match kicks off at 7:30 PM IST. Live streaming and live telecast of the IND vs URU game will be available to watch in India.
Uruguay, who won the inaugural FIFA World Cup in 1930 and then again reclaimed the title in 1950, are currently ranked 20th in the world – exactly 118 places better off than the Khalid Jamil-coached Indian side, who are 138rd.
The South American giants featured at the FIFA World Cup 2026 earlier this year.
India head into the fixture on the back of a spirited 1-1 draw against Panama in Bengaluru and a 0-4 defeat to five-time world champions Brazil at the same Kolkata venue on Saturday.
Ryan Williams, who scored against Panama, has been India’s best player in both games. Manvir Singh also gave a good account of himself in the Brazil match.
The goalkeeping department, however, has been suspect with both Gurpreet Singh Sandhu and Prabhsukhan Singh Gill letting in soft goals against Brazil.
Uruguay, meanwhile, will be under the stewardship of Diego Forlan, the 2010 World Cup Golden Ball winner, who has taken charge of the team following Marcelo Bielsa’s departure in the follow up to Uruguay’s group-stage exit from the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
La Celeste will be without Real Madrid captain Federico Valverde, ruled out with a left-ankle injury, but still boast a plethora of world-class players like Darwin Nunez, Ronald Araujo, Lucas Torreira and Rodrigo Bentancur.
Interestingly, Forlan is no stranger to Indian football, having turned out for Indian Super League side Mumbai City FC back in 2016.
The friendly also brings the curtain down on a historic international window for India, who played three World Cup nations within the space of a fortnight.
India vs Uruguay football head-to-head
India and Uruguay have only met twice in international football to date with the South Americans holding a 2-0 lead in the head-to-head record.
Their first meeting was at the 1982 Nehru Cup. Manas Bhattarcharjee scored for the Blue Tigers in a 1-3 loss at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata.
In 2001, India lost 3-0 to an Uruguay B team in the Millennium Super Soccer Cup in Kochi.
