dpJon Small, a beloved rocker best known for his collaboration with Billy Joel, has died.
He was in his late 70s, according to multiple reports.
News of his death was first shared by his friend Gigi Shapiro on Facebook.
“This is so very sad,” she wrote. “Jon Small has passed away. Jon started out in a band called The Hassles with Billy Joel and then they formed the band Attila. But Jon went on to have a huge career as a director and producer. My husband Jay Kulick worked with him a lot. I remember seeing Jon backstage at ‘Billy Joel’s Last Play at Shea’ for 2 of the most amazing nights of music and special guests.”
Joel shared a photo of the two together on Instagram and wrote, “RIP Jon Small.”
“Very sorry Billy,” Steve Brown replied. “Jon was great. Loved working with him on our ‘One in a Million’ video. God Bless & Condolences.”
Parade Magazine reported that Small was also known for his work with Garth Brooks, Reba McEntire, Run DMC, Luke Combs, Blake Shelton, the Beach Boys, and Aerosmith on their music videos, and he also worked on TV specials and concert films.
“The Long Island Music & Entertainment Hall of Fame is saddened to learn of the passing of inductee Jon Small, acclaimed drummer-turned-video-director,” the organization posted on Facebook. “Jon was on hand at the Hall of Fame as he was inducted as a member of the Hassles on June 28, 2025. He was such a pleasure to work with. May he rest in peace.”
“Rest in peace Jon Small,” John Bohlinger wrote on Facebook. “You were one of the most remarkable people I’ve ever known. Incredibly talented, wildly funny, generous, loving, amazing person. I am forever grateful to you. Much love, my friend and mentor.”
