dpTEMPE, AZ (AZFamily) — Sun Devil Hockey posted a message Saturday for their teammate who was hospitalized after collapsing during a workout.
“Thinking of you, 27,” the post was captioned.
Family members previously identified Matthew Mayich as the student-athlete who was critically injured after collapsing at a team workout, but this is the first time the team has posted about him.
“Matthew- your ASU teammates and the entire Sun Devil community are keeping you and your family in our thoughts and prayers during this incredibly difficult time,” the post said.
Mayich, 21, remains hospitalized in a coma after the team workout on Aug. 20, according to the family’s attorney, Leonard Aragon.
“Matthew’s there, but he’s not, right?” Aragon previously told Arizona’s Family. “His brain activity’s not registering. And so their son is, for all intents and purposes, gone.”
Mayich, a 2023 NHL draft pick for the St. Louis Blues, had recently transferred to ASU from Ontario, Canada.
According to university officials, Mayich collapsed during a sanctioned, outdoor morning team workout. Coaches, training staff and a third-party instructor—identified by Aragon as a Green Beret—were present. Aragon said the medical consensus is that Mayich suffered heat exhaustion.
“We know it’s heat exhaustion,” Aragon said. “There’s been no other indication that there’s any reason for him to have collapsed.”
Aragon described a grueling, station-style workout conducted under demanding conditions, with temperatures nearing 90 degrees and humidity at approximately 50%.
The Mayich family is calling for an independent investigation into the events surrounding the workout, insisting that it be conducted by an outside entity rather than the university.
