Travel alert: Visitors to popular Caribbean vacation spot urged to exercise caution

Visitors to one of the Caribbean’s most popular destinations are being urged to exercise increased caution during their stay.

The U.S. State Department reissued an updated alert for Turks and Caicos Islands last week. The island remains under a Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution level due to reports of crime, including sexual assault, purse snatchings and pickpocketing. Petty crime is common, the alert said, especially in popular tourist areas.

Scams are another concern.

“Tourists should beware of overcharging and scams in tourist areas. You may encounter aggressive vendors. Some will offer “free” gifts that lead to money demands. Most sites have tourist police available to help in uncomfortable situations,” the alert said.

The State Department flagged another concern in the islands – firearms.

It is illegal to have firearms or ammunition in Turks and Caicos, including single bullets and cartridges brought in by mistake in carry-on bags or luggage. A firearm license or permit from the U.S. isn’t valid and laws are strictly enforced, especially at airports were travelers are leaving the country.

Travelers found with firearms or ammunition face arrest, jail time and heavy fines. Some U.S. citizens have been detained and unable to depart for several weeks or more after being found with bullets in their luggage, the alert said. Offenders can face 12 years or more in prison.

People who travel to Turks and Caicos are advised to review all security updates and enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program. Other advice:

  • Before you leave the United States for the Turks and Caicos Islands, carefully check your luggage for any loose ammunition or weapons you may have forgotten.
  • You may wish to use different bags for travel than the ones you use to store or carry weapons and ammunition at home. This may help you avoid accidentally bringing illegal items into the Turks and Caicos Islands.
  • Do not answer your door at your hotel or residence unless you know who it is.
  • Use caution when walking or driving at night.
  • Do not physically resist any robbery attempt.
