It was at the grass-court major that she finally planned to reunite with her sister to play doubles, but an injury suffered during a singles match meant she was unable to take the court. And so, their grand return came last month (August) at the Cincinnati Open.
Having lost in three sets to Marta Kostyuk and Peyton Stearns, 6-2, 1-6, [10-8], the sisters will look to win their first match together since Roland-Garros 2018 at Flushing Meadows, facing Chinese Taipei’s Chan Hao-ching and Australia’s Maya Joint in the first round.
Joint will be a familiar opponent for Serena, who lost to the young Aussie in her only singles match this season at Wimbledon. Chan has also beaten the Williams sisters in a doubles match on one occasion at the Beijing Open 2013, setting up a thrilling battle in New York.
The match is scheduled for Thursday, 3 September, with the start time still to be determined.
