A Pennsylvania lawmaker is seeking to reduce the jury duty exemption age to 70, according to the memo.
State Rep. Nancy Guenst announced the proposal on Wednesday, Aug. 5, to members of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives.
Under current law, Pennsylvanians can be called for jury service until age 75. Guenst’s proposal would lower the exemption age by five years.
Alleviating stress for older residents
Thousands of Pennsylvania residents report for jury duty every year, bringing a range of perspectives to court proceedings. Serving may require jurors to arrange transportation, travel to a courthouse and attend lengthy hearings.
Guenst argues that those responsibilities can be exhausting for older residents. She claims that lowering the exemption age would reduce the travel demands and stress associated with jury service.

Guenst said the legislation would “prevent older individuals from having to travel long distances to participate in jury duty, giving them more time to spend with their families and friends as they age.”
She described the proposal as a practical step toward supporting the health, well-being and quality of life of Pennsylvania’s senior citizens.
The legislation has not yet been submitted for introduction.
