dpAs the Red Sox look to remain aggressive ahead of the trade deadline, they could be trying to land a big fish catcher.
The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal named the Red Sox as one team with “varying interest” in Rockies catcher Hunter Goodman. However, Boston could have competition from division rivals, as Rosenthal mentioned both the Yankees and Rays as other teams also interested in the catcher.
Goodman is in the midst of a career-best season, making his second straight appearance in the MLB All-Star Game while having already tied his career high in home runs with 31. While Goodman is under contract in Colorado through the 2029 season, the Rockies are not contending and could try to send him out for a huge return package.
However, Colorado is reportedly in no rush to trade Goodman, so any interested team would have to blow the Rockies away with an offer.

Over the past two seasons, Goodman has established himself as one of the best hitters at his position, as he already surpassed 30 home runs before the calendar turned to August. Goodman’s power would make him a great fit in Fenway Park.
The one big flaw in Goodman’s hitting profile: He strikes out a lot. Goodman’s 139 strikeouts this year are currently the fifth-most in Major League Baseball, and he is just 14 away from surpassing the most in a season in his career.

Goodman is making just $810,000 this year, and he will be eligible for arbitration for the first time during the offseason. Therefore, Goodman has 3 1/2 years left on his deal before he becomes an unrestricted free agent after the 2029 season.
Any team that trades for Goodman would have a young, powerful catcher under control for more than just the rest of this year. He would be a natural fit as part of the Red Sox’s young core.
However, that contract status may also be the main reason why the Rockies decide to keep him. While Colorado will miss the playoffs once again this year, the team could hold onto Goodman in hopes of turning the franchise around within the catcher’s contract years.
