PHOENIX (AZFamily) — Friday is a First Alert Weather Day, with high rain chances and a chance of thunderstorms as well. Saturday and Sunday are also First Alert days, with a second storm system set to move in late Saturday and into Sunday.
Around 9 a.m., morning rain and low ceilings forced a ground stop for arriving flights at Sky Harbor International Airport. The ground stop was canceled around 9:45 a.m.
The chances of showers and thunderstorms will last through this evening in the Valley, with chances peaking between the late morning and early afternoon hours. Rainfall amounts of half an inch to an inch are expected, with higher totals possible where thunderstorms develop. Any thunderstorms that develop today could be quite strong, with damaging winds and quarter-sized hail possible. Temperatures today will peak in the mid-70s.
A Flood Watch is in effect today from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Rain chances drop a bit by the evening hours, and while rain is still possible tonight, the activity should gradually be winding down.
Saturday morning will likely be dry, with a high of 79 degrees expected Saturday afternoon under mostly cloudy skies. Rain chances begin to climb during the evening hours. Trick-or-treating temperatures will be in the low 70s, with a 50 percent chance for showers.
Another Flood Watch goes into effect for the Valley Saturday at 11 p.m. and continues through 5 a.m. Monday. More widespread showers are expected starting Saturday night and continuing throughout the day on Sunday. A few thunderstorms are also possible by Sunday afternoon. Rainfall chances are at 90 percent for the Valley on Sunday.
Because the rainfall will be more long-lasting, Sunday’s rain totals could be upwards of two inches in parts of the Valley. Higher elevations across our state could see even more rain. Flooding will be a concern across the state on Sunday, especially since the ground will be saturated from Friday’s rainfall.
Dry weather returns on Monday and continues through next week.
