Californians have voted to approve Proposition 3, which provides permanent funding for schools and healthcare by extending a tax on high incomes.
With 99% of votes counted as of Wednesday morning, the measure has received 4,483,291 “yes” votes, or 59%.
Forty-one percent were against the proposal, with a total of 3,159,553 “no” votes.
The proposition “maintains $5 billion to $15 billion of annual state income tax revenue by making a temporary tax increase on high-income earners permanent instead of letting it expire in 2031,” according to the state’s official voter information guide.
Supporters included the California Teachers Association, CA School Nurses Organization, California State PTA, and Planned Parenthood Affiliates of CA.
The measure was opposed by the California Taxpayers Association, Family Business Association of California and the California Hispanic Chambers of Commerce.
