Statement expected on Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools superintendent’s future, sources say

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) – A statement from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools board about the future of the district’s superintendent is expected on Wednesday, according to sources.

WBTV has been told an announcement regarding Dr. Crystal Hill, the district’s superintendent, could come as early as Wednesday, June 17, days after the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School Board held an 8 a.m. closed-session meeting on personnel.

Hill has served as the district’s superintendent since July 2023 after previously serving in the interim role. She joined the district as chief of staff in May 2022.

Concern over Hill’s whereabouts

There has been growing concern about Hill’s recent whereabouts, including her absence from several graduations this year. Former school board members told WBTV they found it unusual for the district’s top educator to miss such milestone moments for thousands of students.

Hill has recently been praised for leading the district to historic test-score gains and helping secure passage of a $2.5 billion bond.

The year has also been rocky, with board members raising concerns about her proposed budget; for the first time in district history, the board voted it down 8-1 before later approving a revised version after additional workshops and discussion.
