Apple beats Q4 estimates on strong iPhone sales but misses on China revenue, stock falls

Apple (AAPL) stock fell 4% before the bell on Tuesday after the company reported its fourth quarter earnings on Monday, beating expectations on the top and bottom lines on strong iPhone sales.

This is Apple’s first earnings call with new CEO John Ternus, who took over the role from Tim Cook on Sept. 1.

For the quarter, Apple reported earnings per share (EPS) of $2.10 on revenue of $114.48 billion. Wall Street was looking for EPS of $2 on revenue of $113.46 billion, according to Bloomberg analyst consensus estimates.

The company saw EPS of $1.85 and revenue of $102.46 billion in the same period last year. Greater China revenue fell short of projections, coming in at $17.54 billion versus estimates of $18.75 billion. Apple’s iPhone sales came in at $57.58 billion versus an estimate of $56.48 billion.

Services, the company’s second-largest segment, saw revenue of $31.57 billion compared to a projected $31.58 billion. Apple’s Mac business brought in $10.79 billion. Analysts were looking for $9.69 billion.

Wearables and iPad generated $8.3 billion and $6.23 billion.

Ternus says memory pricing is ‘unprecedented’

Apple CEO John Ternus pointed out the massive increase in memory pricing due to the AI build-out.

“What we are seeing with memory pricing right now is unprecedented,” he told investors.

The company saw higher memory costs in the September quarter compared to the June quarter, but had the benefit of carry-in inventory and benefits of certain non-memory components.

For the December quarter, Ternus expects even higher memory costs partly offset by product pricing, as well as carry-in inventory in December.

Beyond December, he says the company sees memory prices continue to increase and a decreasing benefit from carry-in inventory.
