dpTom Selleck has not appeared on Boston Blue, the Blue Bloods spinoff that starts its second season this week. Its showrunners say they would still like to bring him in.
Brandon Margolis and Brandon Sonnier, who developed the CBS series, spoke about a possible Selleck return in an interview with Screen Rant published Oct. 7. Their comments were later reported by People.
Selleck, 81, played NYPD Commissioner Frank Reagan on Blue Bloods from 2010 to 2024. The show ran for 14 seasons on CBS before it ended.
“It remains wish fulfillment on our part. We would love to have Tom, and to get to write for Tom would be a dream come true,” Margolis said.
He added that a return would depend on “what’s the right story to tell, and does it make sense to have Frank there for the character.”
“It’s a long, never-ending conversation, let’s put it that way. Because as much as we love Tom, we know how busy he is,” Margolis said. “So we’re always trying to think of ways to make that story possible.”
Sonnier also put the focus on the story. “We don’t ever want to do it just for the sake of doing it,” he said. “The right story that brings Frank into the world of Boston Blue will present itself, and when it does, it’s going to be an episode of television that we can only dream to write.”
Who’s on ‘Boston Blue’ Season 2
Boston Blue premiered on CBS in October 2025. It follows Frank’s son, Danny Reagan, played by Donnie Wahlberg, after he moves from New York to Boston and is paired with Detective Lena Silver, played by Sonequa Martin-Green.
Several Blue Bloods actors have already turned up on the spinoff, including Len Cariou, Marisa Ramirez and Bridget Moynahan. Will Estes is set to return as Jamie Reagan, Danny’s younger brother, in Season 2.
Martin-Green has also said she wants Selleck on the show. She told Woman’s World in May that she would “love to have him.”
“We will make sure the story is just right because Tom is so adamant about the story, as he should be and as we all should be,” she said.
What Tom Selleck Has Said About Returning as Frank Reagan
Selleck has sounded less sure. He has said he was frustrated when CBS canceled Blue Bloods, and in November he told Hour Detroit that Boston Blue is “another show.”
“I think it’s partly my lot in life to make sure Blue Bloods has its place in television history, but I don’t think it’s my lot in life to keep playing Frank Reagan,” he said. He also said he “can’t predict the future.”
Selleck’s history with CBS goes back decades. His contract for Magnum, P.I. cost him the role of Indiana Jones in 1981.
Boston Blue Season 2 premieres Friday, Oct. 9, at 10 p.m. ET/PT on CBS. Season 1 is streaming on Paramount+.
