dpTracy Morgan is facing backlash for his disparaging comments about teachers while speaking with Saturday Night Live’s Marcello Hernandez for Variety and CNN’s Actors on Actors series.
In a clip posted by Variety, the conversation starts with Hernandez speaking in jest about getting in trouble at school for being mischievous and talking too much. Morgan defended his behavior at the time, saying, “They didn’t understand you. You had a sense of humor. And they couldn’t control that. God gave that to you.”
While Hernandez took the opportunity to point out that he is now “getting paid for mischief,” Morgan followed up by taking a swipe at teachers who are “still making minimum wage,” before taking a sip from his mug.
“No,” Hernandez shouted with a seemingly uncomfortable laugh.
“You know how much them teachers probably making right now?” Morgan asked, to which Hernandez responded, “Man, not enough.”
It’s not hard to believe that any of those who work in elementary schools are not being paid what they deserve when you consider the students they are dealing with on a day-to-day basis, and the fact that these teachers are spending their own money on school supplies.
Morgan added that he “can’t stand teachers,” while belittling their “ceiling” in the profession.
“I can’t stand teachers,” he said. “You know why? Because they have a ceiling. They have a limit. That’s all they ever gonna be. Man, I teach my kids, sky’s the limit.”
