WTA Guangzhou continues with a busy third day in China, as the second round gets underway and players look to build momentum, secure valuable ranking points, and keep their late-season ambitions alive. With established names and emerging talents taking to the court, there is plenty to look forward to in today’s schedule. As ever, we at LWOT will offer our predictions for every match, but who will come out on top?
WTA Guangzhou Day 3 Predictions
Katerina Siniakova vs Lanlana Tararudee
Head-to-Head: Siniakova 1–0 Tararudee
Katerina Siniakova arrives at WTA Guangzhou as a recent champion after winning the Osaka title, including a dominant 6–1, 6–0 final over Ashlyn Krueger. Her ability to vary the pace and redirect the ball should help her prevent Tararudee from settling into baseline exchanges. The Thai player did take their previous meeting to three sets in Warsaw, so she has shown she can trouble Siniakova when she plays with conviction.
The challenge for Tararudee is sustaining that level against an opponent who is currently finding solutions in a variety of situations. Siniakova’s momentum and tactical flexibility should carry her through, though Tararudee could make her work for it.
Prediction: Siniakova in 2
Harriet Dart vs Janice Tjen
Head-to-Head: First meeting
Janice Tjen’s 6–2 6–2 win over Polina Kudermetova suggests she is already comfortable with the conditions at WTA Guangzhou. Her direct ball-striking can quickly put opponents on the back foot, and that could be decisive against Dart, who needed three sets to get past Tatiana Prozorova. If Tjen takes control of the middle of the court, Dart may struggle to turn defence into attack.
Dart’s experience gives her a chance to disrupt Tjen’s rhythm, particularly by changing the height and pace of rallies. Still, Tjen’s sharper start and ability to seize the initiative make her the pick in a matchup where the first few games could set the tone.
Prediction: Tjen in 2
Han Shi vs Dayana Yastremska
Head-to-Head: First meeting
Shi’s home-court advantage could help her start confidently after a straight-sets win over Alevtina Ibragimova, but Yastremska’s power presents a different challenge. The Ukrainian can finish points quickly with her groundstrokes, pressuring opponents to defend and return serve effectively. Shi will need to use her court coverage and consistency to make Yastremska play extra shots rather than get drawn into a hitting contest.
That balance is difficult to maintain against a player who can take the racket out of her opponent’s hands. Yastremska’s aggressive game carries some risk, but her ability to generate pace should create enough openings to secure the win.
Prediction: Yastremska in 2
Paula Badosa vs Sinja Kraus
Head-to-Head: Badosa 1–0 Kraus
Paula Badosa has already beaten Kraus at a WTA 125 challenger event in Austin this year, and the Spaniard’s heavier groundstrokes could again prove difficult for the Austrian to handle. Badosa also opened her WTA Guangzhou campaign with a comfortable win over Carol Young Suh Lee, while Kraus advanced past Panna Udvardy. The question is whether Kraus can make this encounter more competitive than their previous meeting.
Kraus will need to seize opportunities early in rallies and avoid letting Badosa dictate from the baseline. If Badosa establishes her forehand and controls the centre of the court, she should be able to repeat the pattern of their Austin match. Her previous win gives this prediction a clearer tactical basis than simply relying on ranking or experience.
Prediction: Badosa in 2
