South Carolina freshman tight end Caden Ramsey was arrested early Monday morning in Berkeley County on a charge of “racing on a public road.”
The 19-year-old was arrested by the Moncks Corner Police Department and booked at into the county jail at 4:02 a.m., according to online records. No other details on his arrest or the alleged incident were immediately available.
Ramsey has a bond hearing scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Monday, according to Berkeley County online court records. (South Carolina players have an off day on Mondays.)
“We are aware of the situation with freshman tight end Caden Ramsey and take matters like this seriously,” a South Carolina Athletics spokesperson told The State. “We reserve further comment at this time.”
Ramsey, a 6-foot-5, 220-pound tight end from Cross, South Carolina — which is located in Berkeley County — played six snaps in the Gamecocks’ season-opening win over Kent State. Head coach Shane Beamer praised Ramsey’s play, naming him one of USC’s Scout Team Offensive Player of the Week.
“He continues to get better,” Beamer said of Ramsey during his Sunday teleconference with local reporters.
According to state law (SECTION 56-5-1590), it is “unlawful to race or assist in racing on public roads. … It shall be unlawful to engage in a motor vehicle race or contest for speed on any public road, street or highway in this State or to aid, abet or assist in any manner whatsoever in any such race or contest.”
Penalties, according to state law, could include “revocation or suspension of drivers’ licenses and registrations,” fines “not less than two hundred dollars nor more than six hundred dollars” and possible prison time “for not less than two months nor more than six months … in the discretion of the trial judge.”
