dpThere is a heavy police presence in south Minneapolis Tuesday afternoon due to an active standoff.
Chopper 5 is flying above the scene near West 28th Street and Nicollet Avenue, near Eat Street.
Many police and law enforcement squads are in the area, and the FBI and ATF have now arrived at the scene. The public is asked to avoid the area, and nearby roads have been closed for the time being.
The Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office says some of its deputies were trying to serve an arrest warrant this morning when they were fired upon. Authorities confirmed to KSTP that no injuries have been reported.
Sources tell 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS that deputies were serving a Minnesota Department of Corrections (DOC) warrant for illegal possession of guns and ammunition.
Sources also say that when a man started firing at deputies, he was holding a woman and child hostage. The woman and child have since been released and are believed to be safe.
Additional deputies and Minneapolis police officers were called to help.
An apartment building has been evacuated and the suspect remains barricaded inside, authorities say.
